I’m a pretty capable fella. If something needs done, I can usually handle it. I can build things or move things or figure things out. If someone asks me if I can do something, my response is usually, “Yeah, I can do that.” However, something struck me as I was reading through the story of Joseph.
“Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I had a dream, and no one can interpret it. But I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it.” “I cannot do it,” Joseph replied to Pharaoh, “but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires.” Genesis 41:16
Joseph, a fully capable young man who had interpreted dreams before, states the clear truth: he can’t do it. He doesn’t have the power or ability. However, God does. And with God’s help and guidance, Joseph interprets Pharaoh’s dream.
So this gets me thinking, how capable am I really? Yes, I can do a lot of things, but only because God has strengthened and gifted me to do so. At any time, if God withdraws His ability from me, I could do nothing. That’s a very humbling thought. And makes me want to take a page from Joseph’s book and give credit where credit is due.
Today, may you recognize God’s power and guidance in your life, strengthening and gifting you to do even the most minor tasks. May you recognize that you cannot, but God can.
