This week, I was reading the gospel of Luke (My family has been doing a bible reading plan that focuses on unity in Jesus, and we found ourselves in Luke 6 this week). While reading about Jesus preaching on the plain, I noticed this phrase in verse nineteen that caught my attention and made me ponder what it means.

“The whole crowd was trying to touch hium, because power was coming out from Him and healing them all” (Luke 6:19).

I’m not sure I have thought much about this before. Did you catch it? “POWER WAS COMING OUT FROM HIM”.

The broad context ultimately highlights Jesus’ compassion, authority, and the hope He brings as the embodiment of God’s power and love. What stands out is when I ask myself what this looked like and what it meant. Here are a couple of thoughts I have:

The verse suggests that physical or spiritual energy flowed from Jesus to those who touched Him physically. Could it have been an actual sensation when they experienced His healing? Sure, it could. Did those around them notice a visible change in the person being healed? I’m pretty sure of it. Jesus’ divine power to heal and restore confirms His authority over sickness and affirms Him as the messiah prophesied about in the Old Testament.

The verse suggests a holistic restorative healing for physical, emotional, and spiritual ailments. Those who are crippled, blind, or deaf would have full functionality. Others who are suffering mentally, emotionally, or from demon possession would have been relieved completely (Luke 6:18 mentions those being healed from “unclean spirits”). Jesus’ healing ministry was about restoring humanity completely—physical health, spiritual reconciliation, and emotional wholeness. We just discussed this in the NHYG class on Wednesday night. There is not one time that Jesus healed someone halfway. He completely healed people 100%. POWER WAS COMING OUT FROM HIM!

What do we learn from this?

We need to believe in Jesus’ ability to heal us today. If you are suffering physically, pray for healing. He can do it. If you are suffering emotionally, mentally, or spiritually, pray for healing. He can do it. Witness the power coming from Him. Trust in His power to work in your life. Watch the healing power bring wholeness to your life. Let His healing power give you hope. There’s power in Jesus, and it comes out from Him!

In Christ, alone.
