It’s hard to understand a God that is love (1 John 4:7-21) can also hate. It usually makes us uncomfortable to talk about what God hates. Still, the Bible speaks of specific actions and attitudes that God hates. It is in Proverbs 6:16-19 that lists out seven things the Lord HATES.

There are six things which the Lord hates,

Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him:

Haughty eyes, a lying tongue,

And hands that shed innocent blood,

A heart that devises wicked plans,

Feet that run rapidly to evil,

A false witness who utters lies,

And one who spreads strife among brothers.

This probably makes us uncomfortable because, in one way or another, we are guilty of some, if not all, of these things. Let’s take some time to meditate on each one of these sins that God hates and see why God hates them. Perhaps we will realize our own guilt and turn away from these hateful, wicked ways.

Number One: God hates a proud look

God hates it when someone thinks and acts better than he/she is. Proverbs 16:18 says, “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” All through the Bible, we see how pride is associated with failure, never success. Phycologists today will readily talk about someone who has an “inferiority complex,” but it is high time we address those that have a “superiority complex.”

Pride is at the apex of evil. Pride is what keeps people from obeying the gospel and serving in the body of Christ. Those that are infected with pride will say: Will my reputation be affected if I become a Christian? What will my friends say? What will my family think?

Your salvation is absolutely dependent on expelling pride. Jesus said, “And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted” (Matthew 23:12)

More to come…

I love you,
