I’ve got a song in my head just about 24/7. No fooling, for a good six months the 1976 Elvis country tune “She Thinks I Still Care” would not leave my brain. Before that it was Weird Al’s “My Baby’s in Love with Eddie Vedder.” There’s no rhyme or reason to any of it. I wish I could not be this way. The other day, mercifully, it was an old hymn that was stuck in my mind, specifically “We’ll Work Till Jesus Comes.” As it happens, while humming the tune, I realized something…

“The Devil never takes a vacation.”

Which, of course, led me to this quote from Major Monogram…

But I digress.

I’m reminded of Paul’s words of encouragement to the Corinthians, telling them “always to be abounding in the work of the Lord” because their “labor is not in vain” (1 Corinthians 15:58). Christians must work, but we don’t work in order to earn our salvation or to earn a place in Heaven. No, we work because we have an enemy who is constantly working against us, and if we don’t work against him, pushing against the tide of wickedness that he conjures up, we surely will be swept away.

We cannot slack off. We cannot relax. We cannot think for one moment that the Devil is on break, because he does not grow weary in evildoing. Likewise we must not grow weary in welldoing (Galatians 6:9). The Devil works, and he will continue working until Jesus comes. We must do likewise, and when the Lord’s return day arrives, He will come back to receive us who have been faithfully working. Meanwhile, He will cast away forever the Devil who has been working against Him. Be sure that you’re on the Lord’s side when He returns.

Be sure you’re working, because you can be sure the Devil will be until the last possible moment.
