Today we are busy people. We have a hundred things going on and often we are multitasking several things at once. You know who else was busy? Martha.

Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who say at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to hemp me.” Bu the Lord answered her, “Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:38-41, italics added)

Martha was up to her eyeballs things to do and I’m sure that she was multitasking like champ. But all of her work was distracting. When she talks to Jesus about her work load, he correlates distracted with anxious and troubled. The work that she was doing, which was not what she really should have been doing right then anyways, was causing her anxiety and trouble.

So what distractions do you have right now? What work load is causing you anxiety and trouble? Jesus makes it clear that there is only one thing that is necessary: sitting at his feet. And when we get rid of the distractions we will also get rid of the anxiety and trouble. Sure, some things may not get done, but we need to learn to recognize what things in life are really important, and what things we treat as important but really aren’t. Jesus didn’t even consider food important compared with doing the will of the Father (John 4:31-34). If something as important as food was a distraction to Jesus, can you imagine what he would say about Netflix?

Take time to get rid of the distractions and sit at Jesus feet.
