The rich young ruler approaches Jesus looking for an answer to an age-old question. (Matthew 19:16). He asks, “What good thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal life?” Sometimes, I read this and am too hard on this fella. He seems sincere, and Jesus responds to him compassionately and says, “Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good, but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments” (verse 17). Jesus is teaching that God alone is good and even equates Himself with being good. So let’s ask:

What is God’s goodness?

According to the different words in the scriptures used to describe goodness, we have several words to explore. The word here is AGATHOS which describes that which is “good” in its character or constitution. It is beneficial in its effect and morally good. God is, essentially, absolutely good. Here we learn from Jesus that God is wholly good and not only in appearance but also in all that He does and touches. God’s goodness reaches beyond His character, including all His thoughts, words, and actions. All that God does is good, and its effect on all things is good.

God’s goodness includes tender acts of compassion, chastising corrections, and decisive punishments. What we understand about God’s goodness shapes our responses to Him and His Word. God’s goodness shapes our relationship with Him and reflects what we believe, teach and practice in His name.

God’s goodness is demonstrated in creation. After God created everything, including man, He exclaimed that what He saw was very good. God’s goodness is shown in His laws. Romans 7:12 says, “So then, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.” God’s goodness is demonstrated in His plan of salvation. The message of salvation is good news!

What does this all mean for you and me? We should seek God and His goodness. We should strive to obey His commands. We should seek to meditate on God’s goodness as seen all around us. We should respond to the good news and appreciate God providing a plan for salvation.

God is so good it’s hard not to love and revere His holy name.

God is so good. He’s so good to me.

I love you,
