Currently, I’m teaching the 5th and 6th-grade class on Wednesday evenings. I’m loving it. I do try to make it fun but I do expect a lot out of these great kids. (They have great parents and I know they are teaching them at home and it makes it easier for the Bible teacher when the students are learning at home. I’ll be addressing this in regards to adults and their bible classes in another article). Anyway, I digress…
I expect the 5th and 6th graders to do their memory work because I believe it is a good thing to do. Here are two reasons why:
  1. The Word of God is powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12). It is literally “God-breathed” from the mind of the Holy Spirit (2 Timothy 3:16-17). So, if we can fill our minds with His Words by memorizing scripture, we will be able to equip ourselves with one of the most powerful spiritual weapons there is.
  2. When we hide God’s Word in our hearts it will help us overcome sin. The Psalmist says, “I have treasured Your word in my heart, So that I may not sin against You” (Psalm 119:11). Not only did he read and hear the word of God he internalized it and placed it in his mind and memory for future use. When sin creeps up on us the Word of God goes to work. If we have memorized it makes it that much easier to access and overcome.
I want to encourage you to do your memory work. It does not matter how old you are. If you are in 5th and 6th grade, younger or older. Put God’s Word in your memory.
I love you,
Alex
