Heaven has a King and everyone there serves Him.

In Hell it is not so.

Contrary to the caricatures presented by popular media, the Devil is not the king of hell, nor is he the god of hell. There are many oft-repeated misconceptions about hell, one of which comes from Milton’s Paradise Lost, which contains the line:  “It is better to reign in hell than serve in heaven.” The quote presupposes that the Devil decided he would rather leave Heaven to become the ruler of Hell. At the same time, you can, frequently, find imagery and depictions in popular media of people suffering in hell, looking like they’re in a rust-colored cave with fire all around, wearing rags, and being poked and prodded by pitchforks wielded by the Devil and his demons, etc.

These ideas do not accurately convey a Biblical depiction of Hell or its supposed hierarchy.

The Bible does not describe Hell as the domain overseen by the Devil. In fact, that’s how the Bible describes the WORLD…

But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

(2 Corinthians 4:4)

The Devil is the ruler of this world. He has cast his pall over the earth and spread an environment of sin and temptation everywhere we go. To be a Christian is to be in the minority, it is to be different, it is to serve a ruler other than the default sovereign. We serve Jesus; that’s the exception.

The Bible says that, at the end, the Devil and his angels will be judged and found guilty along with the rest of the disobedient (Revelation 20:10). The Bible says that Hell is the place originally prepared for the Devil and his demons and that other disobedient people will go there will them (Matthew 25:41). Everyone will suffer and there will be no hierarchy that sets the Devil up as the master of the realm. On the other hand, those who are faithful will enter into a life of perpetual bliss, removed from the sin and temptations the Devil bombards us with every day. We will dwell in the presence of our King forevermore. As for Satan and those who chose to listen to his lies, they will be cast away from the throne of that Heavenly ruler.

Hell is not Hell because the Devil is king there. Hell is Hell because God is not there. Hell is Hell because it lacks the presence of the Heavenly King. Heaven has a hierarchy; God rules and the rest worship Him unendingly.

In Hell everyone is equal.
