Recently, I have been praying out loud that I can be blessed and be a blessing. I’m asking God to give me blessings and that I can give blessing to others. I don’t think there is anything wrong with asking for that. Have you ever prayed for blessings? Maybe you’ve prayed for strength, peace, good health, or help with a difficult situation. But have you ever just asked God to bless you. These are all good things. Surely, its not selfish to say these prayers. The Scriptures encourage us to ask God for what we need but I believe we can take it a step further by asking God to give us opportunity to bless others.

Jesus said “It is more blessed to give that to receive” (Acts 20:35). Here he reminds us that true joy is not just from what we get as blessings but also how enjoyable it is to be a blessing to others. However, it is not just about giving money or gifts away. It can also be about how can my attitude, demeanor, and actions can lift someone else up.

Keep asking God for blessings. Ask Him for the things you need. James tells us that “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights” (James 1:17). God wants to bless His children like any good father would. So please pray for those things. But take it further and pray, “Lord, make me a servant today and help me be a blessing to someone else.”

When we receive God’s blessings lets ask how we can pass this on to someone else.

Here is how to live this out in your life today:

  1. When God gives you peace, share it by comforting someone going through a storm.
  2. When He blesses you financially, look for someone you can help.
  3. When you learn something from God’s Word, teach or encourage someone else with it.
  4. When you feel God’s love, show that same love to someone who feels forgotten.

So today, I encourage you to pray both of these prayers:

“Lord, bless me.”

“Lord, let me be a blessing.”

In Christ alone,

Alex Mills
