In ages past, I used to be a runner. I was never a very fast sprinter, but I could keep my legs moving as long as the next guy. My friends and I would go out for runs that would last for miles and miles. And while we enjoyed the benefits of running such as toned muscles, high metabolisms, and general increased health, we also endured the hardships such as shin splints, side stitches, and muscle cramps. Whether I was running around town for fun or competing in a marathon, what would get me through the pain was keeping two thoughts in mind.

1. The finish line is out there.
2. Just take the next step.

Our Christian walk is not supposed to be pain free. There are going to be hard times that must be endured. Christ says “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” (Luke 9:23). Paul says “For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him” (Phil 1:29). But focusing on the pain and the hardships will only magnify them. Instead, focus on the joy and relief of crossing that finish line.

And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.
Hebrews 12:1-2

1. The finish line is out there.
2. Just take the next step.
