Trees cover a huge part of the land surface on Earth. And from something so simple and common-place as a tree, there is so much to learn about God by looking at this small part of His creation. We see how God can take something small and insignificant like an acorn and turn it into something massive and strong like an oak. We see how God can make things grow when they spend time in His light. And we also see how God can give new life to something when it has been cut down.

“For there is hope for a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that its shoots will not cease.” – Job 14:7

What gives a tree this awesome ability to regrow are its roots. The parts that are above ground are what everyone sees, admires, and judges a tree by. But it’s the unseen roots that feed, support, and anchor the tree.

Think of your faith as a tree. Some people have faith that is strong and well established like and old hickory tree. Some people have smaller, younger faith like a sapling. But no matter the size or age of the tree, it still needs the nourishment and support from its roots.

So, again, think of your faith as a tree. How can we get our ‘tree’ to grow? How can we ‘fertilize the roots’? The Bible tells us that “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (Romans 10:17). In other words, we need to set our roots in the word of God. We need to be studying the Bible and committing it to heart. When scripture surrounds all the roots you have set, they will be healthy and strong, able to withstand storms. And if hard times cut down your faith, it can regrow if you have rooted yourself in God’s word.
