Mary Did You Know?

Have you heard this song? It’s not necessarily new, but it’s not one of the classic Christmas songs like “Away in a Manger” or “O Holy Night.” But if you listen to any station or music app that plays Christmas music, I’m sure you are familiar with it. It is asking Mary, as she is holding baby Jesus, does she understand that she is not just holding a baby, she is holding the Messiah; the Son of God. Mary, did you know?

The answer: Yes, she knew. Because she was told.

In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee,  to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” (Luke 1:26-33)

She knew who he was because she was told.

We, too, know who he is because we have been told. Not by an angelic messenger, but by the Word of God.

We know he is Lord of all creation – (Colossians 1:15-23)
We know he rules the nations – (1 Corinthians 15:24-28)
We know he is the perfect lamb – (John 1:29)
We know he is the Great I AM – (John 8:58)

Mary knew. Do you?
