Hey all you gardeners out there! Do you know what time it is? It’s planting time! I got out a couple of weeks ago and got my garden spot all tilled up and ready to go. Then, a couple of days ago I found a dandelion that had made one of those puff ball things. What luck!! I pulled all of the little seeds off of the end and planted them in my garden. I’m so excited! I have my garden all planted with the seeds I got from the dandelion. I wonder what will grow. I’m hoping for some nice, juicy cantaloupes, maybe some tomatoes and cucumbers for canning. Oh, and strawberries. I hope some strawberries come up; the kind that make the big fat berries. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see!

So, what do you think is going to grow in my garden? I think most people would agree that I am going to get a garden full of weeds if all I have planted was a bunch of dandelion seeds. It’s laughable to think that I will get melons, and berries, and vegetables simply because that’s what I want to grow despite what I’m putting in the ground.

Why then do we think that we will harvest the Fruit of the Spirit when we have sown the seeds of worldliness?

Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. (Galatians 6:7-9)

Please read this passage again, slowly and think about each sentence.

Satan has us deceived into thinking that we can do whatever we want, and in the end, God’s just gonna magically turn our weeds into fruits. He has us believing that because Jesus died for our sins, sin isn’t a big deal anymore. But scripture clearly tells us something different. When we live to please ourselves, we are growing fruit that leads to destruction, whether in this life or the next (or probably both). We cannot trick God into growing melons when we are planting dandelions. The only way to reap eternal life is to purposefully live a life that honors God.

This time of year is great time to pant something. I encourage you to get pot and plant a seed. As it grows, let it remind you all season long that what you get comes from what you sow. So choose your seeds carefully.
