When the weather changes from super cold to super beautiful in just a couple of weeks, a phrase from Shakespeare’s Richard III always runs around in my head.

“Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by this sun of York.”

The imagery is amazing how it captures the bitterness and solitude of a cold, nasty winter and shows how it has been completely rejuvenated by warmth and color. All in just a few words. In the play, Richard is describing a time in his life that was when he was particularly down, brooding over his family’s state of affairs, the civil wars that were going on, and his own physical deformities. His sadness and misery were likened to the bitterness of winter. However, hope kindles in him when his older brother, Edward IV is crowned king. Richard’s winter has now been made summer.

Days like today help me remember that my winter has been made summer. When I go through times in my life when I am particularly down, or dealing with conflicts, or dealing with frustrating circumstances, Jesus never fails to rekindle life and hope back into my soul. He is my King and that is far more important than any of the circumstances of my life.

Bask in the Son today and feel the winter of your discontent being made into summer by this glorious Son of God.
