So I posted this Daily Bread at this time last year, but I’m reposting it because I think this same thought when I see so many people doing all of the ‘little’ things that it takes to get ready for VBS.

Serving the Lord with a pair of Scissors

How do we serve the Lord? By going overseas to be missionaries? By going into ministry? By feeding the poor and homeless? The answer: yes.

But can you serve the Lord with just a pair of scissors? The answer: yes.

Let’s consider the Israelite nation just after they left Egypt. There was Aaron who was the priest over Israel who made sacrifices on behalf of the people. Aaron served God. But in order to perform the sacrifices, he needed certain tools and instruments that God was specific about. There were men in Israel who were skilled metal workers and goldsmiths. When they made these tools, were they serving the Lord: absolutely. In order for them to work with the metal, they needed wood for fires to melt down the gold. Did the people who donated wood serve God? Yes, if they were doing so to please God. The people who gave the wood served the Lord just as much as the people who shaped the gold. And they served the Lord just as much as the men who used those golden things to make sacrifices.

Last night, I saw dozens of people bringing kids closer to Christ. I saw dozens of people sharing the gospel. And do you know how they did it? By cutting paper with scissors, by tearing and folding pieces of tape, by gluing pieces of paper together, by bringing a bag of cookies, and many other ‘small’ things. Everyone who showed up to help get ready for VBS served the Lord just as much as anyone. We all have a part to fulfill in God’s kingdom. For some people, that may be using a pair of scissors. The important thing is to do it intentionally for serve God and to do it with all your might.

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters (Col 3:23)

We still have more work to do to get ready for VBS. Be sure to come tomorrow evening from 5:30-8pm because what we are doing is ultimately serving the Lord.
