I have often said that about half of everything that I say is a movie quote. Of course, that’s an exaggeration, but watch movies so much that in normal conversation, the quotes just come out. I don’t force it. When talking with someone, I might hear something that sounds similar to what I’ve seen in a movie and the quote just rolls of the tongue without even hardly thinking about it.

“I’ll be back”
“I am your father”
“Who ya gonna call?”

As Christians, Scripture should be so much a part of our lives that it becomes a very part of our language. We should just speak it like we do anything else. We should be so familiar with Scripture that we are hearing connections to it in our everyday conversations and letting those quotes roll off the tongue.

Jesus quoted the Scriptures over 70 times in the gospels. He did so when teaching, when debating with pharisees, and especially notable, as a defense against his temptations. The apostles go on to quote Scripture another 200 times. And that’s just what’s recorded. I’m sure that Scripture was a part of their daily conversation, just like movie quotes are a part of mine.

In order to do that, we have to be in the Word daily. Reading it, studying it, memorizing it. Not only for the sake of speaking it, but you can’t pass on to others what you don’t, yourself, possess.

Today, look for opportunities to bring Scripture into your normal conversation.

Fun Fact: did you know that ‘Pulling my leg’ is a commonly used phrase that’s from Scripture? When Jacob and Esau were born, Jacob was holding on to Esau’s leg during birth. Later, Jacob went on to trick Esau out of his inheritance. Jacob pulled his leg and tricked him. When we use the phrase ‘pulling my leg’ we are saying that we are being tricked. “Oh, you’re just pulling my leg.” And there we have Scripture influencing our language.
