This morning, I woke up so incredibly grateful for the confidence God has given me in my salvation. I am sure that if I live faithfully to Him, eternal life awaits me when I die. What a tremendous blessing this is! This security doesn’t come from my own strength but from God’s grace and His calling of His people—the elect. As 2 Peter 1:10 reminds us, ”Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble.”
Peter urges us to be diligent in confirming our calling and election. It is by doing “these things” mentioned in the previous verses (2 Peter 1:5-7) —faith, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love—that we gain confidence in our salvation. As we practice these qualities, we grow to be more like Jesus, reflecting His image in our lives (Romans 8:29). If we lack “these things” then we are “shortsighted”, blind, and have forgotten that we have already been forgiven of our sins (2 Peter 1:9).
Notice how “these things” are qualities of the heart and should be evident in every Christian. If you’re wondering about your salvation, look for these qualities as signs of spiritual growth and maturity. Pursuing them helps us avoid stumbling and keeps us progressing in our Christian walk.
This assurance of election allows us to look at our lives with confidence in our salvation. When we respond to the gospel call through obedient baptism, we are added to the church, joining those chosen for salvation. Peter adds, “For so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 1:11)—a promise of secure, eternal salvation.
What a blessing it is to live with confidence in our sure election!
