Every year, it seems like a big deal to me when I see the first daffodils blooming. For one, they are so colorful. The solid green leaves and stalks and the bright yellow flowers…they seem to defy blacks, whites, and browns of winter. But more than just the color, it’s what they represent that is so important to me; when the daffodils bloom, it means that life is coming back to a cold, muddy landscape and spring is getting close. In my mind, those little yellow flowers represent hope.

However, the hope that they provide is only that the weather will change soon. I am glad to see them, but they don’t do anything for me other than remind me of the coming spring.

Hope that actually changes things is found in Jesus Christ. Hope for the joy set before us (Heb 12:2). Hope for protection and provision (Matt 6:33). Hope for an eternity spent with him (John 3:16). Jesus provides lasting, life-changing hope that defies cold, lifeless hearts just like the daffodil’s color defies the cold, bleak winter.

Today, look for the burst of color the Jesus brings into your life. Let him tell you that the seasons of life will change, but even in the cold, muddy winter, he is still right here with you growing something beautiful.
