Matthew 9:36-38 says, “Seeing the people, He felt compassion for them, because they were distressed and dispirited like sheep without a shepherd. Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.”

Here are a few things to notice about these few verses and a quick application for each one:

  1. Jesus saw the people – We need to get our heads up and see the people.
  2. Jesus had compassion for the people – We need to have a broken heart ready to extend mercy towards people.
  3. Jesus knew they were distressed and dispirited and needed guidance – We need never to ignore the problems of people but see what we can do to encourage them.
  4. Jesus saw that there was work to do – We need to recognize the task ahead of us.
  5. Jesus recognized that there were a limited amount of people that would be willing to do the work – We need to change that and get busy in evangelism.
  6. Jesus understood that evangelism included prayer – We need to pray, begging the Lord to provide more people willing to talk to others about Jesus and then be one of the workers.

Think about the work of evangelism alongside this verse from 2 Thessalonians 3:10 – “For even when we were with you, we used to give you this order: if anyone is not willing to work, then he is not to eat, either.”

Do you think God will provide for you if you do not work in the harvesting of souls for the cause of Christ? I don’t think so.

Let me give you a challenge. Over the next ten days, invite ten people to come worship and study the bible with you. That’s just one person per day. Let’s watch what God will do with this. Don’t just pray God sends workers. Pray God sends you! Let’s get to work in the harvest because it is plentiful!

 I love you,
