Forward: I wrote this Daily Bread several months ago after a really strong storm blew through the night before. But before I posted it, I decided to write on a different topic. So I saved this one and forgot about it until the other day so I’m posting it now. All that to say, pretend there was a really strong storm last night.

Did anyone else get woken up early this morning by the storm that rolled through? At about 6am, I was laying there thinking about how loud it was outside. I was also thinking about how Jesus slept through something like that (Mark 4:35-41).

How did he do that? The noise this morning is what kept me awake. And I know it had to be louder for them on that boat. And the boat would have been rocking all over the place. And it was taking on water, so there’s also the possibility that Jesus was getting wet.

Well, I think there are two major factors that allowed Jesus to sleep through all of that.

  1. When the disciples wake Jesus up thinking that they are all doomed, Jesus asks them “Have you no faith?” Jesus knew, HE KNEW, with all of his being that God was in control and he was going to be fine. So what was there to worry about? Nothing. His mind was at peace so he was able to relax.
  2. He was probably dog-tired after a long day of ministry. We know for sure that during this day he had taught parables to the crowds from a boat. But it is likely that he had also spent that day picking heads of grain and healing a man on the sabbath, arguing with the Pharisees over matters of the Law, appointing the twelve apostles, arguing with the scribes about blaspheming the Holy Spirit, and teaching that those who follow him are who he considers to be his family (Mark 2:23 – 4:41). Jesus was probably exhausted from the day’s work.

When we find ourselves in the storms of life, I think these two things can help us find peace in the chaos. 1: Know that God is in control; don’t just think it – know it. 2. Don’t stand around watching the storm, get busy doing the work of God. Give ALL of your energy to serving Him.

May you be able to sleep during the storms.
