The Ability to Choose the Right Thing

In the movie Frozen II, the character Anna is hurt, scared, and grieving. In this deep, dark emotional place, she sings a song that says, “This grief has a gravity, it pulls me down But a tiny voice whispers in my mind You are lost, hope is gone But you must go on And do the next right thing.” It is this voice in her head that is in every head to make a choice. This voice would be attributed to your conscience. Every person, no matter if they believe in God or not, has this voice in their head. For Anna, this voice was telling her to choose to do “the next right thing.” The question is, who determines what the right thing is?

As believers in God, we would give credit to God as the one who directs us to what is right and what is wrong. Nevertheless, I believe that even an atheist can choose the right thing.

This choice to do the right thing comes from an inner state of mind that is given by God. Even the atheist believes it to be wrong to steal, murder, and cheat. Ask the atheist if it would be right for someone to steal their things, murder their family, or cheat them in a contract. They will answer in the negative.

This reasoning is called the “moral argument” or anthropological argument.” It is founded on the reality that people everywhere have a “sense of ought.” The moral argument teaches us that in certain circumstances, things should be done a certain way. People should act and think a certain way that is right and good for the whole of humanity. Even an atheist or agnostic has a sense of justice. Even the atheist or agnostic is upset when justice is violated. The moral argument demands a moral Supreme Being as the originator of what is moral and immoral.

Proverbs 3:5 says, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding.” Even though I believe that we can choose to do the right thing even without the direct influence of religion, I believe every human has been influenced by religion to have the opportunity to choose to do the right thing. Every human has been influenced indirectly and some directly by religion. The indirect influence guides even the atheist to determine what is right and what is wrong. Therefore, God must exist because all have been influenced by the Supreme Moral Being, God.

So, I believe in God because we can choose to do the next right thing.

God loves you and so do I,
