I don’t want to be presumptuous. Maybe you’re already praying quite a bit. It’s just that I’ve observed over the years, both from personal experience and in talking with others, that when hardships arise, praying about it is not always the first thing that Christians think to do. When blessings come to us, praying with thanksgiving is not always the first thing brethren think to do.  When small, petty problems pester and annoy us, we don’t always think “I should pray about this.”

And, if that’s the case with you, then you should probably be praying more. However much you are praying each day, I’ll bet you can squeeze in a few more minutes. Am I wrong? How easy is it to “vent” (complain) to a friend or colleague about something annoying? There’s five minutes you could instead redirect to the throne of God in a constructive way.

How often have you sat on your bed, frustrated because you can’t find your favorite pair of socks? Did you think to pray about it? You might think it’s too small a thing to “bother” God with, but God is not a therapist who charges by the hour. Call Him. The number is toll free and He’s always ready to listen. You may think the problem is too small, but He understands that small problems add up. Nobody has just one small problem. Carrying one small rock in a sack is no big deal, but carrying a hundred of them is a weight too heavy to lug.

Give God your petty things (1 Peter 5:7).

As of this writing, I’ve got this black tie with a little red razorback embroidered on the bottom. I love that tie. I can’t find it anywhere. Is it a minor thing? Yes. Does it affect anyone’s salvation? No. Did I still ask God to help me find it? I sure did, and I didn’t feel bad about it, either. God’s not overworked. He doesn’t have a lot on His plate. He has no plate. He’s infinite!

Who in a Kingdom has the right to awaken the King in the middle of the night to ask for a glass of water? Not just anyone can knock on the door of their sovereign’s chambers and make such a minor request. Who can?

A little child of the King, that’s who.

You’re a Christian. You’re a child of God. He sent Jesus to die for you so that you could have a relationship that was close enough and familial enough for you to bring any and every burden to Him.

Ask Him to help you find your socks!
