Have you ever thought about all the times God has used high places to bring about something of spiritual significance in someone’s life? Seriously, it amazes me how many times a mountain is mentioned and to notice the spiritual significance in the event that happened there. Take a look up these mountains:
- It was at Mount Ararat that the ark landed and Noah and his family disembarked finding a whole new world (Genesis 8:4).
- It was at the mountains of Moriah where Abraham’s faith was tested when he almost sacrificed his only son of promise. Abraham calls the place “The Lord will Provide” (Genesis 22:1-14).
- It was at Mount Sinai where the people of Israel gathered at the base and Moses ascended to receive the Ten Commandments (Exodus 19-20).
- It was at Mount Gerizim where the Israelites were to place the blessing before entering the Promised Land. They are to place the curse on Mount Ebal. Blessing for their obedience to the commands and curse if they do not. (Deuteronomy 11:26-32; Joshua 8:33).
- It was at Mount Nebo where Moses stood and viewed the promised land that he would never set foot in. He died not long after (Deuteronomy 34:1-4).
- It was at Mount Carmel where Elijah’s confrontation and contest took place with the prophets of Baal. God’s existence as the one true God is proven while Baal was proven to be non-existent or maybe he was using the restroom (1 Kings 18:19-40).
- It was at Mount Zion where Jerusalem is and the temple houses the dwelling place of God in the Holy of Holies (1 Kings 8, Psalm 2:6, & Psalm 48:2)
- It was at the Mount of “Beatitudes” somewhere in the northern parts of Israel where Jesus went up to open His mouth and teach them what it takes to be a citizen in the Kingdom of God and how to have righteousness that can surpass that of the scribes and Pharisees (Matthew 5:1 – Matthew 7:28; Matthew 5:20).
- It was at Mount Tabor (traditionally considered) where Jesus brings His closest friends and is transfigured before them while a voice from Heaven calls out “This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased; listen to Him!” (Matthew 17:1-9).
- It was at the Mount of Olives in the garden of Gethsemane near the village of Bethany where Jesus prayed before His arrest and where it is believed He ascended into heaven (Luke 22:39-46; Luke 24:50-53; Acts 1:9-12).
While these certainly are not all the mountains mentioned in the Bible they are just a few that I found to be interesting. These were mountains and places that hold historical value and most certainly spiritual significance in the narrative of the Bible. I’m not sure why God sometimes chooses mountains to do amazing things but He does. Maybe the idea is in the symbolism that the higher you get in altitude the higher you can get in your attitude toward Him. Whatever the case, it is worth noting that it is on mountains that God sometimes marks a pivotal moment in the lives of people.
This weekend we invite you to Summit Youth Rally. Join us Friday evening, Saturday, and Sunday morning. Let’s see what God does on the mount of North Heights.
For the Lord,
